Origins of Festivals

The earliest festivals were way back in Ancient Egyptian times . Festivals were really important to them, poor and rich came together , and have a chance to have a break for a few days. The Egyptians' festivals were mostly religious, and were held every year .One of festivals they celebrated was New Year's Day, like we celebrate today.

For many people , it means a group of people coming together for some theme-an event. For many people and cultures , it has meant a day of thanks ,fun, joy and relaxation .

Many countries have their own festival or "feast ". The words Feast and Festival are historically interchangeable .

With all the benefits and positive things from a festival, we,like the Ancient Egyptians , forget our daily problems for a few days. That is something we can thank Cleopatra for.

Bazaar! poster

We had to come up with a poster for Bazaar!Everyone voted on who's poster was the best , and poster with the most votes was Jasmine's and Nathan's .
I chose to do my poster the way it is because :it's bright,eye-catching,and the information is clearly shown .
I like the final poster/posters , because they look like professional posters and the information is clearly shown .

We have gone round the college putting the final poster up on the walls .

We have received 12 tickets for the event to sell to friends.

Fitzwilliam/Contempory Art/ Kettles yard

I hadn't been to the Fitzwilliam for ages , so it was good to go again.I learned quite alot from the trip because I didn't normally look at the art gallery at the fitzwilliam, only just look at the objects . Also I have been to the contempory gallery , but havent really been interested in it , and i've never been to Kettles Yard before.

Fitzwilliam

We had to leave all our bags in a cloackroom so ..we didn't knock anything over... I thought we were going to look at the objects there aswell as the pictures/art , but we went straight to the paintings.I never thought that 'Jack The Ripper ' could have been a painter, and found it interesting, and we looked at things i wouldn't of looked at normally.

Contempory Art

We didn't stay there for long because no-one was into the art there. We got the information we needed and went out after about 15 minutes.

Kettles Yard

When we were walking up to Kettles yard it was raining, so we all got there wet.I had never been there , and looking round i thought the art was plain, black and white colours . The only colourful art was a projection on a wall. It was different to other galleries I have been to , because-the walls were low, the art was...plain-like . It was hard to find the gallery because none of us had been there , and there were no signs to it , it was hidden away.

The house was the best part, the ladies who owned the house were really welcoming .I liked that you could sit on the sofas and chairs , and sit and relax. Also all the art was different so, there was a lot to look at . I had never been there either , or knew it was there. It was good to visit the house, but probably wouldn't choose to go again.

Cineworld

Alice In Wonderland

-Tim Burton

Last Weekend I saw Alice in Wonderland at the cinema.

story-

Alice is going to be married , but she doesn't feel ready.she follows a white Rabbit down a hole and lands in a place, between Wonderland, and the real world. As soon as she arrives in Wonderland everything is different since she was last there.Monsters, talking creatures, and a magical, but dark world. Wonderland isn't wonderful anymore, unless Alice changes it for good.

It was good because its a twist of the original Alice in Wonderland, it was magical and happy, and sweet. But Tim Burton made it Dark , with an evil Queen and monsters. Also because it's got lots of famous actors in it , which made it good, and Johnny Depp is a great actor.I would see it again.

I went to Cineworld ,Leisure park. I always go there because it's down the road from me.The prices are bit too high, more than £5 for a ticket to watch a film, should be cheaper, and food and drink should be cheaper. But even though its expensive, i still go there, because it's conveniant .

Its a good place to go too, because you dont have to go all the way to the Grafton to watch a film, and as well as Cineworld, there is TenPin and some restaurants . You could go and watch a film then go to Tenpin or eat out somewhere, or the other way round.Cineoworld is easy to get to becuase there is a bus stop right on the corner of the Leisure park, the train station is near by, and there is a car park.

Scene progress report

So far I have created a review on 'Boomslang' , which is on at The Junction. I chose to look into it because it is exclusive to The Junction. I was given a task to search for local bands,DJ's....in Cambridge. I have printed the review.
My group,Emma W and Carys, were given the task to look at the music, dance, and club scene in Cambridge.I chose Clubs , becuase i havent been to a club , and i have found out more about them.
I have looked at jobs available in the creative and media industry in Cambridge. To find out we went to The Junction, we were given a couple of sheets about different jobs and chose the one we thought sounds good. Even though our homework was to come up with 3 questions to ask, we didn't have time. However we got questioned ourselves .

I have been recording my research on 'Blogger' and in 'pages'.I like this unit because it's interesting to find out what there is in Cambridge, and you can find out about places you might of not known before.

Hawk figure

this is a sculpture of a Hawk

It is made from Fritware and StonePaste

It was made in Iran.

It was given/added to The Fitzwilliam Museum in 1967

(there isn't much information on this figure because the makers of it are unknown)

I chose this sculpture because it was interesting to look at, the different markings on the figure. Also because i like animal figures, and it caught-my-eye.

Junction 11th March

We all weren't sure what we were going to do in the lesson.
We were first told we were going to ask our 3 questions we came up with, but it changed, instead of us asking , they asked us.
We had to choose from 5 jobs-marketing officer,casual bar attendant, comedy/music programmer/organiser...
When we were told we were going to have a ' job interview' , we all didn't like the sound of it, because we weren't told we were going to do that, and didn't get what the point of it was...
I chose marketing officer because it sounded like a good job.
The interview was ok because we went in groups of 2 or 3 .
I didn't get to ask my question because they were asking us the questions

Performance day

We performed on Thursday 11th February in the Market Square , In Cambridge.
On the day it was really cold, and it made a difference to my performance at first. It was too cold to do anything, but we all tried our best.

For the performance I wore the Cramba t-shirt created by the performance group.
The performance lasted about 30 minutes.
Even though we had a Facebook group to tell people about the event , not very many people turned up to watch us .

The press group told a few newspapers and news crews about the event, but sadly they didn't turn up .

Risk assesment

Our CRAMBA performance was delayed because the college didn't have a risk assesment

why is it important to do a risk assessment for outdoor performances?

So everything is covered , just incase there is a accident, or something happens. For example, when we are carrying our instruments around, they might fall , or get damaged. Also, it's outside, so, it would be harder to perform, rain, snow or really crowded. The college could get sued if anything bad happens, because the college is in charge of us.

what is the impact of risk assessments?

The Cramba performance has had to be delayed because of the risk assessment. On wednesday we were ready to perform the next day, the outfits were ready, and the beat was in everyones mind.
But because of the risk assessment , we have to wait until next week. Maybe by Thursday next week the group might have forgot about the performance, or need to practise more .

the plan

Blake is going to put the instruments in a van, and is going to drive the instruments to the Market Square. We are going to meet at The Junction @ 1:30 , then walk down together to the Market Square.

Thursday 4th February-dress rehearsal

how did it go?
instead of going in the theatre part of the Junction, we went to the gig part .It was the first time we got to wear our outfits.I think we are all ready for the performance next week, and i think we sound good, and we are listening to each other more .

how did you feel in the outfits?
I think the t-shirts were big , even Small size was big.I liked the designs though on the T-shirts- Cramba logo and the Cram logo. The masks were really pretty , but couldn't see much out of them.

do you think they are successful?
I think the performance team - who made the outfits- did really well. They searched for masks, t-shirts and created the outfits.

what would you add or change anythin
g?
The T-shirts should be smaller, and actually fit people.Thats the only change.

change

I created the Samba posters - one design in light colours, and one in full colour for Flickr and Facebook.
The information put on it at first was...
  • cramba are putting on an event in aid of the Haiti disaster
  • Thursday 4th February
  • Market square , Cambridge
  • 3pm start
But...I had to change it because the performance has changed to Thursday 11th February. It was going to be on the 4th , but apparently we need a safety letter , to say we can go(which is annoying).
  • so the performance has now changed to Thursday 4th February
  • we had to re-do the poster because they changed the date

so far..

  • I designed the posters for the Cramba band/group, printed them off
  • I've put both of the posters on Flickr
  • designed a banner layout
  • finished my design for the Samba poster
to do....
  • help my group, design, with the banner

Cramba poster

This is the Cramba poster for the event. it includes...
  • the cramba logo, created by matt
  • shakers- picture that will go on the t-shirts
  • us at the junction-Samba workshop
  • information on the event, time , where it is
  • i thought of a green background because the Brazilian flag has green on it
so far i have created a poster and put it on Flickr

samba in Cambridge research report

Both groups have a sense of Band identity because-’Arco Iris Samba’ all wear colourful jumpers and Thudbox all wear smart, but casual, clothes. Also they are always in time with each other and all work and perform as a group .

Both Arco iris and Thudbox’s members interact with one another by listening to each other .Also Arco Iris have a conductor to make sure everyone knows who’s meant to be playing, and keeping the rhythm.

They encourage their audiance to be in the performance by; enjoying themselves , playing a catchy rhythm , by getting the audiance to clap to the beat.

Both groups are in a line so all the players can be seen by the audiance. The people with the same intruments as each other stand next , near, to each other.

Lighting is only used in one of the performances , Thudbox Bal A. Blue lights are on the drums to make them stand out fro mthe group. There is always a white light on the person playing on the xylophone-type-intrument which makes her stand out -Probably because she is keeping the beat .
Also the lights change colour on the performers- sometimes orange, sometimes blue-neon light and normal lighting.

The two performances are in different places, on the street and on a stage. But choreography and performance is basically the same .

Samba

  • The performance-the video is of a Samba Carnival , i think its really interesting and entertaining. Before we started looking at Samba on the course, i hardly knew anything about it.
  • costumes-mostly yellow and blue. The girls are dressed in yellow, gold, and blue , Which makes the carnival courful .
  • where is it-Rio de Janeiro, brazil. At the Mulatas Samba carnival 2009
  • Own experiance at the Junction- I think Samba is a fun, uplifting type of music. With Samba instruments you can play any rhythm- at The Junction we tried Drum and Bass and it it sounded really good .
  • street festivals are very common during carnival and are highly populated by the locals
  • samba is a type of music played mostly in brazil , brought over by the slaves
  • Samba music is also based on percussion instruments

campaign

My campaign follow-up

So far for my campaign i have managed to get signatures/people to join Facebook...
  • 29 on Facebook
  • 12 to sign the petition
On Facebook I have been asking my friends to join my group , and talking about my campaign .Only 29 people have joined , even though i invited everyone on my Facebook friends list , 81 people . I would of liked more people to join.

I got a group of people to sign my petition , 12, and i thought it was enough, but now when i look at it , it doesn't look like very much.I could have gone round college and got more petitions.

I am planning on sending my petition , or mentioning my campaign to the College.I think the best person to ask is heather chambers because she could take the campaign further if she agreed with it .
